A few week ago my old friend Rosli Mohd Nor called me to help him organising his Temerloh Open.Well I said ok and he also asked me to bring the equipments.To be Temerloh is always exciting for me because I have many friends that I made in late eighties.Among strong Temerloh chess players are Rosli himself,ShukurMustaffa,UstazJamaluddin,Patahir Akhir,Shaharuddin Mohd Said and veteran Kurnaini Karim also known as Tengku Aspalani or Kasputra are among names that he used during tournamnet.

Temerloh "Chess Center" is located at Seberang Temerloh which is just located under the bridges that cross the Pahang river.At the center you can play chess almost 24 hours daily.Please made sure you pay a visit to the chess center.Dont forget to try the famous ikan patin there.


When I reached Temerloh and saw list of participants I found out that only 3 familiar players ,Ian Udani ,Kamaluddin Yusoff and Abdullah Che Hassan.In my mind Terengganu players should have an equal chances to finish among top winner.

I will be going to Temerloh open today as an arbiter.Many Terengganu players also going to play there.Terengganu players who said is playing are Norazmi Mohd Nor,Ruzenan Abu Bakar ,Suhaidi Mustaffa ,Abdul Rahim Ramli ,Zailan Abas , Rozam zam, Adam and maybe Nor Ilhamuddin .I will update this blog during the event.See you all there.Organiser in Temerloh also said Ian Udani , Kamaluddin Yusuf , Abdullah Che Hassan among the players who register.

MAS HAFIZUL MISSES A GM NORM

Mas Hafizul Hilmi

Malaysia top player Mas Hafizulhilmi Agus Abdul Rahman give commanding performance in qualifying round of world championship in Vietnam last week.He finished 6 points from 9 round game format to produce his best ever result in his quest for norm and ultimately the Grandmaster title.Mas misses GM norm merely by half a point.I think Mas has learnt a lot from this event and hopefully he will improve his games in future tournament.

They are 54 players took part in zonal whereby most of the players are from Vietnam.Majority of them are under twenty and they even field up 3 under 12 players (Le Quan Long ,Nguyen Van Thuan Thanh and Le Huu Thai).Can our junior match thiers? But here in Terengganu they a teachers and parents insist their children played only in age group although they already state junior representative.

Its not that easy as we speak ,Mas really need a dedicated team behind to support him.Look at Indonesia team they always travel with coach and team manager when they played in overseas tournament.At least our player feel comfortable and can concentrate fully on their game.But the bottom line is ringgit and cents.

MAKSAK 2009 FLASHBACK

Although annual MAKSAK chess event concluded two weeks ago and Sarawak team captured the title but I read interesting game analysis from Kelantan first board player Mohd Azizul Mat Daud about his game against Hashim Jusoh of Terengganu in our last round encounter.Honestly I always warned my players about capabality of players from others teams.Dont take them lightly and don't underestimate them whom "may" do not play tournament regularly.

Everyear I see each team improved their performances and they gave their best.This is contributed by chess activities in their particular states.In this case PDRM , Perlis ,Perak , Pahang are no longer whipping boys.

On the other hand I can also see they are team who selected their players among goodfriend without going through selection tournament.This may hinder the development of chess in their own state.


In the years to come I can see Kelantan ,Selangor will emerged as a strong challenger for Maksak title including traditional powerhouse Kuala Lumpur and Terengganu.I have doubt about Sarawak who have only Abang Mohd Ridhuan and Morsin Ahmad after Lim Kian Hwa retires soon.Our Terengganu players Hashim Jusoh, Hisamullah Harun and Ahmad Rizal may not perform this year but they are good at least for another 20 more years.Article by arch rival here

Perak Chess Association will organised yet another event Syuen Hotel on 16 August 2009.This tournament will be divided into 3 categories Open ,under 15 and under 12.Lately chess activities in Perak seems flourish with more tournament compare to last few years.In the nineties Perak had produce promising juniors like Mohd Hussin Jamil and Mohd Johan Jamil sons of Mohd Jamil Yahya the Malaysia Sport Council Technical Chairman for chess.I still remember names like Deon Moh and Aaron Yee both are among top juniors players in Perak during their heydays.More information about Perak Chess event click here.

TEMERLOH OPEN

This weekend there will be another chess tournament at Temerloh Pahang.This time organised by Persatuan Catur Temerloh.The two days event will be played at Dewan UMNO Haji Abdullah Kia which is located at Bangunan UMNO Temerloh in Mentakab.In the open section a total of RM3000 for the top ten winners.They are 10 prizes for local players.Also they are prizes for under 16 , under 12 ,best lady and best veteran.NM Zarul Syazwan is the defending champion.

THE SARAWAK FIDE RATED TEAM EVENT

Mr Lim Kian Hwa of Sarawak Chess Association

Sarawak will host another FIDE rated event ( article below) on 25th to 27th Disember 2009 at Hotel Premier Sibu Sarawak.This event is open to all state representative.Each state will be represented by four players and will be provided food and lodging.Playing format is simple you will not be paired againts your state teammate.And at the end of the seven round , your points will be total up with your state teamate in order to determine the state champion and total prizes sum of RM5000.How that interesting.Last time state affiliate organised team event was in 1991 at Sabah where by Terengganu won and second place Kuala Lumpur.

Back to Sarawak event, this will be a FIDE rated event and it is possible to get rated altough the this event will be play on 7 round basis.Furthermore this event will be play in 3 days.According to FIDE regulation chapter 15 :

Rate of play :

1.1. For a game to be rated each players must have the following mininum periods in which to complete all the moves assuming the game last 60 moves.

1.11 Where at least one of the players in the tournament has a rating 2200 or higher .each players must have a minimun 120 minutes.

1.12 Where at least one of the players in the tournament has a rating 1600 or higher , each players must have a minimun 90 minutes.

1.13 Where all the players in the tournament are rated below 1600,each players must have a minimun 60 minutes.

Number of round perday

3.1. No more then three round per day and total playing time of no more then 12 hours.

THE UNIVERSAL CHINESE SPORT- KEJOHANAN CATUR MALAYSIA TERTUTUP 2009

The Sarawak Chess Association one of active chess assocition in Malaysia will organise a FIDE rated event on 25th Disember to 27th Disember at Hotel Premier ,Jalan Kampung Nyabor Sibu
Sarawak.This tournament is jointly organise with Lanang Chess Association.

Term and Conditions

1.This championship is open to all Malaysian citizen only.However players who have represented Malaysia in the last Chess Olympiad are not permitted to take part.

2.All players shall take part in a seven round swiss individual event.

3.The Organizer WILL PROVIDE 3 NIGHTS HOTEL ACCOMMODATION and food for four State players of the following state : Sabah , Sarawak , Johor ,Melaka , Negeri Sembilan,Selangor
Perak,Kedah, Perlis,Kelantan , Terengganu ,Pahang and Wilayah Persekutuan.Others interested players shall take part at their own expenses.

4.State represented from the same state would not be paired against each other.

5.The state representatives' results shall be added to contribute to the State Team standings.

6.Swiss manager program will be used for pairing.

7.IA Hamid Majid will be the Cheif Arbiter for the event.

8.A players represented the state must be currently staying ,working or studing in the state and has domiciled in the state for more then six months or was born in the state.

Honestly I am not happy with Terengganu performances in Maksak last week.We are not at our best even losing unexpectedly to teams that we should beat quite easily.Some of our players seem out of touch with the game, losing a complete winning position but I know all of them give all of their best .I know that Terengganu will recover next year and we will clinch the title back .

NATIONAL RATING JULY

National rating just came out.From the list I can see 6829 chess players are at least rated.Probably more then 5 events are not rated officially.To calculate all this is time consuming ( I simply will give up if they ask me to do this) and good in math.Although 6829 are rated I believed several thousand players should be rated ,I say maybe another 5000 should be rated.Out that total figure I believed 2000 is die hard chess players.But it is very hard to find an exact number of chess population in this country.Base on the national rating Ruzenan abu Bakar is the top player and second is Abdul Rahim Ramli.Both are not FIDE rated players but need 4 rated games to be officially rated.Mohd Khairul Nazrin is the highest rating increment by making 259 points due to his participants in various rated event in the country for the past 3 months.

Zarul Syazwan Zullkafli continues his good form to win another rapid event.This time he finished 6.5 points to win the De Laguna Port Kelang OpenHe scored five consercutive win before draw one game with secondplace winner Kamaluddin Yusuff and in the last round Zarul beats Ian Udani to become eventual winner.Third place goes to prolifik Mohd Fadli Zakaria with six points.Securing fourth place is Zarul Shafiq Zullkafli with 5.5 who has better tie break from 4 other players.9th place won by 9years old Yeoh Li Tian and Terengganu Mohd Syazwan Zulkifli.The other Terengganu player who also taking part is Hashim Jusoh could only managed to be in 15 place with 5 points with lower tie break.


NWM Wendy Tan Li Ting easily win under 12 category and Roshan Ajeet Singh adn third place was won by Mohd Irfan Haqim.27 juniors players took part in this category.

New Maksak Terengganu Champion Ahmad Rizal Othman

Ahmad Rizal Othman of Jabatan Perangkaan Malaysia (Terengganu Branch) emerged champion in the Maksak Terengganu chess championship,Rizal gained 5 points from 6 game with two drawn with Abdul Rahim Ramli and Khairul Hafiz.Abdul Rahim Ramli finished second with 4.5 points followed by Norazmi Mohd Nor also 4.5 points.Only 18 players from 5 goverment department took part in this event.


The Maksak Malaysia championship will be play at Kota Bharu on 17th to 18th in Kota Bharu.Terengganu is expected to defence the title to equal Kuala Lumpur record.All result here.

More Terengganu players will be listed if they play in FIDE rated event.Some them need to play between 4 to 5 rated games in order to be listed.Hope another 5 or more will be listed by next July.

UNDIAN KUMPULAN KEJOHANAN CATUR MAKSAK MALAYSIA

Pasukan Terengganu bakal pertahankan juara

Undian bagi menentukan kumpulan bagi kejohanan catur berpasukan MAKSAK Malaysia telah dibuat,penyandang juara Terengganu berada dalam kumpulan A bersama sama dengan ATM ,Melaka dan pencabar tradisi Terengganu Sarawak.Pasukan Terengganu tidak akan menghadapi masalah untuk menjuarai kumpulan ini dan seterusnya mara kepusingan akhir.Kumpulan B pasukan Kuala Lumpur menjadi pilihan untuk menjuarai kumpulan ini diikuti dengan pasukan tuan rumah Kelantan,Penjara dan Negeri Sembilan.Kumpulan C diketuai oleh pasukan Pahang ,PDRM ,Perak Perlis dan Pulau Pinang.


Kejohanan catur MAKSAK peringkat Kebangsaan akan dilansungkan di Kota Bharu kelantan pada 17 hb hingga 19hb Julai ,sementara kejohanan peringkat negeri Terengganu akan diadakan pada 3hb Julai di Stadium Negeri ,Jalan Sultan Mahmud Kuala Terengganu.Pemain pemain yang dijangka akan layak untuk mewakili MAKSAK Terengganu ialah Hashim Jusoh,Norazmi Mohd Nor,Abdul Rahim Ramli dan Hisamullah Harun serta seorang pemain "baru" yang berpengalaman.Dengan kemasukan pemain " baru " ini sebagai anggota kerajaan sudah tentu pasukan Terengganu tidak akan menghadapi banyak masalah untuk mempertahankan kejuaraan MAKSAK pada tahun ini.Pasukan Kuala Lumpur dan Sarawak dijangka akan memberikan tentangan yang hebat kepada pasukan Terengganu.Mengikut undian yang diperolehi pasukan Selangor ,Labuan ,Kedah,Johor dan Sabah tidak akan mengambil bahagian.

CATUR DI TERENGGANU SEMENJAK 25 TAHUN LEPAS

Tidak banyak diketahui tentang sejarah awal perkembangan catur di Terengganu bagaimana ianya berkembang.Perbualan saya dengan beberapa pemain veteran Terengganu dimana kebanyakan berusia 60 tahun ke atas menyatakan mereka mula mengenali catur semasa di Sekolah Menengah ditahun 1950an.Catur dimainkan dari semasa kemasa di tempat tertentu seperti di rumah ,wakaf dikampung tertentu seperti dijalan Pasir Panjang ,berhampiran Pejabat Pos Besar Kuala Terengganu.Sepanjang pengetahuan saya tidak ada pengajuran kejohanan catur secara rasmi diadakan sehinggalah pada tahun 1970an.

Itupun diperingkat sekolah menengah dimana kejohanan diadakan untuk memilih pemain bagi memilih pemain dikejohanan MSSM ( Kejohanan catur MSSM 1973- Cikgu Lim Chin Eng sebagai pengurus pasukan) Salah seorang pemain yang terpilih ialah Chan Choong Eng sekarang guru di SMK Bukit Sawa.


Namun begitu kekurangan pertandingan tidaklah membantutkan perkembangan catur di Terengganu khususya di Kawasan Kuala Terengganu.Diantara tahun 1975 hingga 1988 adalah dianggarkan kurang daripada 20 pemain catur yang aktif di Kuala Terengganu kebiasannya mereka berjumpa setiap petang di Sekolah Bukit Jambul ( Jalan Air Jerneh ).Antara pemain yang aktif saya boleh ingatlah :

Senarai pemain diatas yang saya anggap diantara pemain catur yang aktif bermain catur setiap petang ditempat tersebut.Saya mula mengenali sebahagian besar mereka apabila menyertai kejohanan catur Majlis Sukan Sekolah Sekolah Kuala Terengganu Selatan tahun 1979.Semenjak dari tarikh tersebut saya terus aktif sehingga sekarang.Saya mula mengenali pemain terbaik Terengganu Ghalam Sani Abdul Rashid pada tahun 1983 dan kami hampir setiap hari bermain catur di Wakaf Jalan Pasir Panjang berhampiran dengan Maktab Perguruan Pasir Panjang.

Semenjak tahun 1988 hingga 1998 Persatuan Catur Negeri Terengganu tidak putus putus menganjur kejohanan catur ,4 hingga 5 kejohanan setiap tahun antara nya Piala Presiden , Tertutup Terengganu ,sirkit catur daerah dan terbuka Terengganu.Pada masa tersebut saya telah menjadi ahli jawatankuasa PCNT.Nur Ilhamuddin ShaikAli muncul antara pemenang kejohanan terbuka Terengganu tahun 1988.Lim Sin Leong pemenang kategori novis mengatasi Mas Hafizul Hilmi ketika itu berusia 7 tahun.

Pada awal tahun 1990 beberapa pemain baru muncul antaranya Lim Sin Leong (SMK Chung Hwa Wei Sin gang - bekas sekolah saya ) Lutfi Amir Abdul Rahman,Hashim Jusoh (mengenali saya semasa beliau dibangku sekolah rendah),Heng Aik Kiat , Fairul Yusuf , Zailan Abas,Adnan Salleh,Zefri Abd Kadir (Jeff) Mohd Azli Arshad.Diikuti dengan Ruzenan Abu Bakar ,Senu Mohd Nor , Abdul Rahim Ramli (Nor Azmi saya kenali tahun 1983 di malay open)Alias Mohd Amin, Salleh Omar.

Pada masa yang sama juga beberapa pemain junior muncul sperti Wan Mohd Fuad Wan Sulaiman ,Ahmad Rizal Othman ,Mohd Hafez Hilmi Harun ,Mohd Sallehuddin Mohd Salleh serta beberapa nama lain seperti Ihsan Husainy,Faruq Husainy dan Farhana Husainy.Farhana adalah paling menyerlah dalam keluarga Husainy dengan tempat kedua bawah 12 tahun MSSM tahun 1989.

Sebahagian besar mereka masih lagi bermain catur secara aktif dan ada yang telah bersara kerana komitmen kerja dan sebagainya.Bila pencarian jaguh catur diadakan tahun lepas beberapa muka telah muncul dan mereka sedang cuba untuk menyaaingi pemain pemain senior yang ada sekarang.

Selain daripada itu pemain remaja yang sedang meningkat naik seperti Mohd Syazwan Zulkifli,Abdul Kadir Jailani Ramli , Mohd Khairul Nazrin A Rashid ,Mohd Amirul Zahanuddin akan terus mewarnai scenario catur di Terengganu dan Kebangsaan.Pemain wanita seperti Siti Nor Raihan Mohd Shaifuddin hampir menjuarai kejohanan catur MSSM bawah 18 tahun.

Semasa permulaan pengelibatan saya sebagai pemain catur tidak banyak info saya boleh didapati selain kolumn Malay Mail setiap sabtu yang banyak menerbitkan koleksi permainan Kasparov dan Karpov.Buku buku catur diperpustakaan di Jalan Sultan Ismail banyak membantu saya sebagai pemain.

Kuala Terengganu chess league started today at K.T.Beach Resort in Kuala Terengganu.Eight players took part in the first round event and few more players will the joints the event later next week.This event is planned to play every Friday night at the hotel premises.Playing in this league are a few new faces in Terengganu chess scene who are very eager to improve their games.Below are the result.

Kejohanan catur Maksak Terengganu akan di adakan pada 3hb Julai bertempat di Stadium Negeri Jalan Sultan Mahmud Kuala Terengganu.Kejohanan sehari tersebut diadakan untuk memilih pemain bagi mewakili Terengganu dikejohanan catur Maksak Kebangsaan yang akan diadakan pada 17hb hingga 19hb July di Kota Bharu.Kejohanan kali ini ada sedikit perubahan dari segi kategori yang dipertandingkan iaitu kategori individu dan berpasukan.

Syarat penyertaan :

1. Terbuka kepada semua anggota kerajaan.
2.Minima 4 pemain untuk membentuk satu pasukan.
3.Bebas memilih mana mana pemain untuk membentuk satu pasukan,asalkan
semua pemain anggota kerajaan. Contoh : Pemain A bekerja dengan UDM tetapi memilih untuk bermain mewakili UITM.
4.Mata kumpulan dikira berdasarkan kutipan mata individu.
5.Setiap Jabatan boleh menghantar satu atau lebih pasukan.
6.Johan kumpulan tidak semestinya dipilih mewakili negeri ke kejohanan Maksak Kebangsaan.

Harapan pasukan Terengganu untuk mempertahankan kejuaraan Maksak Malaysia adalah cerah dan mampu untuk menghadapi cabaran pasukan Kuala Lumpur dan Sarawak yang merupakan antara pasukan yang terkuat.Mengikut undian terbaru Sarawak berada dalam kumpulan yang sama dengan pasukan Terengganu.
