HAPPY CHINESE NEW YEAR
But nowadays my former school sadly stopped producing talented chess players anymore. For the record the most succesfull chinese player in Terengganu is Lim Beng Huat now a Canadian, he was among the top juniors players in the country in mid seventies.I played with him once during state selection and lose to him quit easily.I should mention here another chinese Ding Kwang Teh who finished among top ten in MSSM also a talented player.I did hear from them for so so many years.

UPDATE: CHESS BACK IN MSSM 2010
My source said that most probably the championship will be held in Kuala Lumpur in May,since the process of selecting players to represent schools ,district and state will take a few weeks.Looks like May school holiday is a reasonable time for everybody to make preparation.
My source said that only 16 players will be selected to represent their state instead of usual 36 per state contingent. That meant we have only 4 category will be contested :-
under 12 boy ( 4 players ),under 12 girl (4 players),under 18 boy ( 4 players ) and under 18 girl ( 4 player ).
On the hand, the selection tournament will be critical to select candidates in some states as the competition are stiff.

2nd DATCC WEEKENDER

The 2nd DATCC or Dato Tan Chess Center tournament just ended last Sunday.I was in Kuala Lumpur but I don't have time to go there since my son playing at Jalan Cochrane.Abdul Aziz Abdul Shukur was the winner.Kuala Lumpur base Terengganu player Nur Ilhamuddin finished in 6th placing with 5.5 points.
From 9 games he loses to Sahir Sarifdin ,Abdul Aziz Abdul Shukur and Soon Wai Cheong and drew with Nik Farouqi.I hope to published some of his game later.
Ilhamuddin as we all call him is the highest rated player among Terengganu players and very active playing in Kuala Lumpur. After graduate from Universiti Utara Malaysia he secured job at Eon Bank where he is now.
During my conversation with him on Saturday, he said that he prepare his opening thoroughly for this event and among Ilham victims are Abdullah Che Hassan a very experienced player. From my points of view about Ilham is that he only play opening that he understand and after making throughly study it,of course with help of Rybka.
He has won few tournament but never big event like Selangor Open or Malaysia Closed and I hope someday he will prove it to other Terengganu players.

HOW MUCH YOU SPEND FOR YOUR CHILDREN FOR CHESS
Let me answer it for your as a parent living in Kuala Terengganu. If I dicided to send my child to Kuala Lumpur to take part in chess tournament the first thing came to my mind is budget.Without it you will not going any where.Let see the breakdown.
1.Bus round trip to Kuala Lumpur ( 2 person )RM140.00
(If you lucky you pay same amount for Airasia ticket)
2.Cheap hotel at chow Kit RM75.00 per night
3.Internal transport RM50
Add up another RM50 for makan and entry fee and total is RM315.That is for 1 day event which what will I spend in Kuala Lumpur.Cost of coaching for my son is on me.
Let see what parent in Kuala Lumpur spend:
1.Petrol and tol RM60.00
2.Entry fee RM20
3.Makan RM50
4.Coaching fee for 1 session RM150.
And the total is RM280.00 roughly about the same amount I spend since I coaching my own son.
That the average total cost parents have to pay for their children involvement in chess and it cost money and time not to mention others factor. Will you consider other sports?
2nd KL JUNIOR CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP
Just came back from Kuala Lumpur yesterday morning with my 7 years old son who took part in under 10 category.Initially I was reluctant to bring my son to take part but for the sake of exposure and atmosphere playing in Kuala Lumpur my son needed this trip. This is his third tournament and his rating is 1176.I don't expected him to do well in this tournament and he could only finished with 1.5 points from 6 games. For the past many years I used to bring other people children to Kuala Lumpur and various part of Malaysia to take part in chess tournament and this is my time to take care of my only child and him for tournament in Malaysia. He is still long way to go in chess and by the time he grow up I hope he achieved something significant in Malaysia chess arena.

SULTAN KEDAH OPEN : FULL RESULT
Tan Khai Boon- Champion
National Master Capel-Second place
My generous host Amri Ibni Hajar
I was not really eager to play in Kedah because I am quite busy with my job and family.Anyhow as a die hard player I decided to play even though I may not become the tournament winner. But to me the most important things is be able to meet my friends from all over Malaysia it does not matter whether you win or not.
I reached Sungai Petani at 4.30 Saturday morning and my old friend Amri Ibni Hajar pick me and and took to his house ,later he send me to the hotelfor check in.Without Amri I will be lost.
This event is sponsor by Jaffolea Chess Club and during the lunch break Kedah chess Association held their meeting to select the new committee members.
Tan Khai Boon results in local chess scene is quite good he played smart chess without taking big risks especially in short time control. He beats Ian Udani in the 6 round although the game could ended in a draw.
Here are the list of Open and under 12 winners - enjoy it.

MALAYSIA INTERSTATES TEAM CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP
Sarawak initiative to revive the interstates team championship is very much applauded. The ever productive Sarawak chess association president Lim Kian Hwa to organize and to give free board and logding seem unheard off.I don't remember when was the last time Malaysia Chess Federation came with that.To host such an event is small thing but the worked to find sponsors is a nightmare and I congragulate Sarawak chess for their big effort.
From the list of the participating team they are ten team confirmed their entry for the championship. All states are represented except for Terengganu , Pahang ,Perak ,Melaka and Perlis. For Terengganu the reason for not going there because most of our players are not available.Although I make commitment to fly there with a young player but the other players still cannot make it on that date.
Looking through at the list of players and I know instantly that three teams looks strong to win the title.Penang ,Kelantan and Selangor are the favorite and I consider Sarawak have an outside chances to win.Dont forget team Kuala Lumpur captained by experienced Ismail Ahmad who is leading the youthful team.
Let take a closer looks at each of participating teams.
1. Negeri Sembilan. This team is a youth team and will not posed strong threat to any other teams.
2. Labuan. Is rather unknown players that may posed little threat to other teams
3. Sabah. To be careful with this team because any mistake will cause top team valuable points.
4. Johor.Surely Renitha is their weak points here when facing with top team but other team members should be able to hold.
5. Kedah.A rather balances team but favorite team should be able to handle them.
6. Kelantan. This is a surprise, a very longtime I don't see Kelantan players form a team.Azizul and Nasrul playing as team with Haq and Nik Farouqi.I guess they may pose serious threat to other team and their placing in the final ranking will depend on Azizul and Nasrul Humaimi performance.
7. Sarawak.I have a lot of experience with this team as Terengganu always play with them in MAKSAK event and I know how their play. Should be able to beat the weaker team but always high In fighting spirit.
8.Kuala Lumpur.Ismail Ahmad with this team and his resourceful young teammates, but I don't know Prabha maybe their weak points.
9. Selangor.Kamaluddin, Fairin, Abdullah Che Hassan and Tun Seri Lanang ( playing against home state?!).Who don't know them? They are the most likely candidate to win this event and should have not much difficultlity when playing with most of other team.
10.Penang.I always admire them for tradition of strong players and they always producing good results in team event. In the eighties and nineties Penang always be Terengganu very strong rival in team championship. They are there to win and only Selangor ,Kuala Lumpur,Sarawak and Kelantan are able to stop them.
My analysis base on my experienced as player and team manager for Terengganu where we managed to win best team in Merdeka chess champion few time and the 1991 state team championship in Sabah.(well that quite long time eh)Good luck to all of the players.

TERENGGANU NOT GOING TO SARAWAK
Your truly who committed to play with Mohd Khairul Nazrin have to cancelled our participant in the championship.Terengganu should be a very strong team if we are able to play.Host Sarawak provided board and lodging for participant team and pay their own airline tickets only which is very generous offer.
I wish all the teams good luck and thank you to Sarawak Chess Association president Mr Lim Kian Hwa.
