SULTAN KEDAH OPEN : FULL RESULT

Tan Khai Boon- Champion

National Master Capel-Second place

My generous host Amri Ibni Hajar

I was not really eager to play in Kedah because I am quite busy with my job and family.Anyhow as a die hard player I decided to play even though I may not become the tournament winner. But to me the most important things is be able to meet my friends from all over Malaysia it does not matter whether you win or not.

I reached Sungai Petani at 4.30 Saturday morning and my old friend Amri Ibni Hajar pick me and and took to his house ,later he send me to the hotelfor check in.Without Amri I will be lost.

This event is sponsor by Jaffolea Chess Club and during the lunch break Kedah chess Association held their meeting to select the new committee members.

Tan Khai Boon results in local chess scene is quite good he played smart chess without taking big risks especially in short time control. He beats Ian Udani in the 6 round although the game could ended in a draw.

Here are the list of Open and under 12 winners - enjoy it.

I AM BACK : BLOGGING IN KEDAH

Hi all, quite sometime since I updated this blog.A lot of thing happened since new year I was busy readjusting my schedule since my son started schooling at primary school.Too sad that this year will no chess competition at school level and definitely effecting chess " progress and development " in this country.

I also have to keep up with the coming tournament, the Jeram Open organised by Azhar Mohd Said and the UTP open. For sure I will post it here later on.Last minute I decided to lay off my family and work commitment for a while and buy myself bus ticket to Sungai Petani to play the Kedah open. This is my second trip here ,last December trip sort of family trip.

Luckily when I arrived here at 4.30am this morning and Kedah top player Amri Ibni Hajar agreed to pick me up.With him I will be lost.I have known Amri in the early 90 when he study at UITM Dungun and he regularly took part in our chess event. For the last 10 years Amri remain as Kedah top player.

Lastly I hope to be able update Kedah Open and continue post Jeram Open and UTP open later on.

MALAYSIA INTERSTATES TEAM CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP

Sarawak initiative to revive the interstates team championship is very much applauded. The ever productive Sarawak chess association president Lim Kian Hwa to organize and to give free board and logding seem unheard off.I don't remember when was the last time Malaysia Chess Federation came with that.To host such an event is small thing but the worked to find sponsors is a nightmare and I congragulate Sarawak chess for their big effort.

From the list of the participating team they are ten team confirmed their entry for the championship. All states are represented except for Terengganu , Pahang ,Perak ,Melaka and Perlis. For Terengganu the reason for not going there because most of our players are not available.Although I make commitment to fly there with a young player but the other players still cannot make it on that date.

Looking through at the list of players and I know instantly that three teams looks strong to win the title.Penang ,Kelantan and Selangor are the favorite and I consider Sarawak have an outside chances to win.Dont forget team Kuala Lumpur captained by experienced Ismail Ahmad who is leading the youthful team.

Let take a closer looks at each of participating teams.

1. Negeri Sembilan. This team is a youth team and will not posed strong threat to any other teams.

2. Labuan. Is rather unknown players that may posed little threat to other teams

3. Sabah. To be careful with this team because any mistake will cause top team valuable points.

4. Johor.Surely Renitha is their weak points here when facing with top team but other team members should be able to hold.

5. Kedah.A rather balances team but favorite team should be able to handle them.

6. Kelantan. This is a surprise, a very longtime I don't see Kelantan players form a team.Azizul and Nasrul playing as team with Haq and Nik Farouqi.I guess they may pose serious threat to other team and their placing in the final ranking will depend on Azizul and Nasrul Humaimi performance.

7. Sarawak.I have a lot of experience with this team as Terengganu always play with them in MAKSAK event and I know how their play. Should be able to beat the weaker team but always high In fighting spirit.

8.Kuala Lumpur.Ismail Ahmad with this team and his resourceful young teammates, but I don't know Prabha maybe their weak points.

9. Selangor.Kamaluddin, Fairin, Abdullah Che Hassan and Tun Seri Lanang ( playing against home state?!).Who don't know them? They are the most likely candidate to win this event and should have not much difficultlity when playing with most of other team.

10.Penang.I always admire them for tradition of strong players and they always producing good results in team event. In the eighties and nineties Penang always be Terengganu very strong rival in team championship. They are there to win and only Selangor ,Kuala Lumpur,Sarawak and Kelantan are able to stop them.

My analysis base on my experienced as player and team manager for Terengganu where we managed to win best team in Merdeka chess champion few time and the 1991 state team championship in Sabah.(well that quite long time eh)Good luck to all of the players.

TERENGGANU NOT GOING TO SARAWAK

Terengganu pull out of team championship in Sarawak next week for not able to form a strong team. Most of Terengganu top players cannot make it on that week because of work commitment although the dates has been well anounced by the Sarawak chess association.

Your truly who committed to play with Mohd Khairul Nazrin have to cancelled our participant in the championship.Terengganu should be a very strong team if we are able to play.Host Sarawak provided board and lodging for participant team and pay their own airline tickets only which is very generous offer.

I wish all the teams good luck and thank you to Sarawak Chess Association president Mr Lim Kian Hwa.

WORLD YOUTH CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP : MALAYSIA DREAM DASHED

Amier Hamzah during Selangor Open 2009

Malaysia hopes of winning any medal at world age group championship ended yesterday when two of its brightest candidate succumbed to more experience opponents.Amier Hamzah lost his 11th round game to Tanuj from America.Amier Hamzah who played french defence lost in 33 moves. He will creates history for Malaysia chess if he beat his opponent and finished among top 3 winners.

Nur Nabila also played well through out the championship but losing two straight games to more experienced opponents who has better opening preparation.

Generally I think our juniors can make it at this stage as Amier and Nabila proved during this championship.I think what they need is the consistance exposure as their peers.Look at Iran who are now able to win world age group championship consistancely and that we need, and up to the MCF to chart the next course.

WATCHING WORLD YOUTH AT PLAYCHESS.COM

I think it's a rare opportunity to watch live game specially involving Malaysia player at world stage. At the world youth championship the organiser provided live games for top board only at official website.Chess enthusiasts everwhere glued to their computer including me.But I have better option I watched live through playchess.com which provided better coverage,I can add analysis engine to game that being play or watching several board simultaneously. This previlages given to all chessbase products buyer like fritz 12.

WORLD YOUTH CHESS : NUR NABILA LEADING THE CHARGE

Promising junior player Nur Nabila Azman Hisham is leading the Malaysia juniors players in world youth championship for under 12 girls in Turkey with 6.5 points. She need to win last two rounds in order to finish top honour in the 11 round game.

Today Nur Nabila will play American Sarah Chiang with the black pieces.Whatever the outcome of her last two round result she has performed well beyond, considering the chess scenario in Malaysia.Kudos to her parent Azman Hisham and Zaza. The other Malaysia representative in this category is Camillia Johari who now have 4 points.

PAIRING ROUND 10 TODAY 9 PM MALAYSIA TIME

WORLD YOUTH UPDATE : MALAYSIAN PLAYERS

Now that world Youth Chess Championship entered 10th round and with one more round to go Malaysia juniors hopes of winning any medal look promising.Nur Nabila is doing very well now .But they have shown that they have the capacity to progress in chess provided that are given more chances, in that sense more exposure in tournament overseas maybe.By playing 25 minutes chess that we are use to have over the weekend is not going to help them progress further.Nowaday you can stay at home and play some good chess.

I know that their parents sacrifices a lot for them but individual initiative will not enough , what we need is combine efford by MCF in order for our juniors players to progress.I believed most of top achievers in this championship will progress further and I convinced they will reached the ultimate goal.As for me I will push my six years old son to reach the far limit in chess.
